TEHRAN (RIPI) -- Iran’s Research Institute of Petroleum Industry has successfully obtained the technical savvy for production of polymeric membranes for purifying water.
Fatemeh Rekabdar, the team leader of the project to develop the membranes, called membrane technology one of the newest and most modern technologies in today’s world, and said: "Today, this technology is one of the best methods used for treatment of water and wastewater in different industries and facilities producing industrial wastewater.”
Therefore, RIPI has committed itself in recent years to develop the membrane technologies in oil, gas and petrochemical industries, she said.
The director of the project further emphasized that the construction of the membrane was carried out at RIPI’s Research Center for the Development of Chemical, Polymer and Petrochemical Technologies, and stated that, a committee was first formed to identify the research literature related to this field as well as client-centered projects in other industries.
There are various types of membrane processes that are used in water treatment, which include microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis, and RIPI is currently working on microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes, the senior researcher went on to say.
She further said that RIPI has closed ranks with the Petrochemical Research and Technology Company in the project, adding the membranes are being introduced in petroleum projects and will be commercialized.
"New membrane methods in the field of water treatment have a higher efficiency, and since chemicals are not used in membrane methods, they can replace conventional water treatment methods and yield cleaner wastewater or even turn them to clear water,” Rekabdar further added.
She said the pilots of MF, UF, and RO membrane processes have been established at RIPI, and said: After completion of the process steps, the construction of each membrane module was put on the agenda and the first module is the UF systems whose membranes are based on polymer membranes. RIPI can now supply the module in an industrial scale.
The team leader for the project further touched on application of membrane processes, saying treatment of urban, sanitary, industrial wastewater, separation and recycling of valuable materials such as precious metals from industrial wastewater, treatment of the wastewater produced by some production units, refineries and petrochemical facilities, and recovery and consumption of wastewater in agriculture and even production of drinkable water can be made possible by exploiting such membranes.
