The Research and Development Faculty for Upstream Industries at the Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI)

Introduction of the Faculty

The Research and Development Faculty for Upstream Industries at the Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI), with over half a century of experience, was established in 1338 SH (1959 AD) under the “Development and Research Administration of the National Iranian Oil Company” at that time.

Its evolutionary path commenced from the “Petroleum Engineering Laboratories.” Presently, this Faculty comprises three independent research centers, namely: “Earth Sciences,” “Petroleum Engineering,” and “Enhanced Oil Recovery.”

Vision:

Conducting fundamental and applied research, comprehensive studies, scientific services, laboratory experiments, and scientific and managerial consultations aimed at meeting the technological needs of the oil industry and addressing operational challenges at the foundational level in the country.

Mission:

The Upstream Industries Faculty strives to achieve the objectives of the oil industry value chain. It pursues the enhancement and acquisition of technology through examining current issues, developmental plans, and forward-thinking strategies in the upstream sector of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC). This initiative aims to present innovative and technological solutions.

Objectives:

• Offering unconventional hydrocarbon resource development methods

• Developing and deploying cutting-edge technologies for enhanced and compatible extraction in Iran’s reservoir conditions

• Adopting an increased production approach by solving issues like wax and asphaltene deposition, sand production, emulsion stability, and more

• Ensuring energy supply chain sustainability through underground natural gas and hydrogen storage

Scope of Activities:

• Dynamic basin modeling and hydrocarbon system studies

• Unified reservoir horizon modeling and localized in-situ oil calculations

• Unconventional oil and gas resource studies and evaluations

• Integrated oil and gas asset modeling

• Comprehensive studies and presentation of hydrocarbon field developments

• Process optimization based on flow assurance studies and acid job package optimization

• Cement and drilling fluid technology development based on indigenous enhancements

• Novel technologies for compatible enhanced extraction with Iranian reservoirs

Introduction to the Petroleum Engineering Research Center:
